Ask Elicia: Can I Be Grateful and Still Want More?

A question for this week:

“I’m thankful for my life, but I still want to grow. I want to create something meaningful and explore a different direction. Can I be grateful and still want more?”

Dear sister,

Yes, you can appreciate your life and have desires for its next chapter.

Gratitude allows you to recognize what is good. Desire can draw your attention toward something you want to explore.

The important work is understanding what “more” means to you.

Give the desire a name

Do you want more money, meaningful work, creative expression, influence, freedom, or time with people you love?

Each answer points toward different choices.

Try finishing this sentence: “I want more room to…”

You may discover that the desire is more specific than you first thought. Perhaps you want to teach, build financial stability, serve women, or use a skill that has been sitting unused.

Naming it makes reflection more useful.

Examine what is feeding it

Consider when the desire becomes strongest.

Does it return during quiet reflection? Does it grow after conversations with people you hope to serve? Does it spike when you compare your life with someone else’s?

Motives can be mixed. You can bring that complexity into prayer without pretending to have a perfect answer.

Ask God for wisdom, and invite a trusted person to help you examine the desire honestly.

Consider your responsibilities

Exploring a new direction requires attention to your actual circumstances.

What can you afford? What time is available? Who would be affected? What skills would you need?

Taking those questions seriously can help you pursue growth with care.

Make room for exploration

You do not have to make a permanent decision immediately.

Research the possibility. Take an introductory class. Draft the idea. Have a conversation with someone doing similar work.

Let your next step help you learn.

You can give thanks for the life you have while thoughtfully exploring the life you hope to build.

With care,
Elicia

For your journal: What does “more” mean to you—and what is one responsible way to explore it?

XOXO, Elicia
