Keep Connection in Your Cold-Weather Calendar

October 29, 2026 | Faith & Identity

When the weather turns colder, staying home may become more appealing.

You may enjoy quiet evenings and fewer trips outside. At the same time, the casual moments of connection that filled warmer days may happen less often.

Consider which relationships you want to make room for as the season changes.

Notice the company you need

Do you want someone to laugh with? A thoughtful conversation? Company while you cook? A friend who can listen without requiring you to organize an entire gathering?

Name what would feel supportive.

For Black women who often serve as the planner or the person everyone calls, receiving companionship may require a different kind of invitation.

Try: “I’d love to spend time together. Could you choose the place this time?”

Choose a manageable way to gather

Connection can fit your energy and budget.

Invite a friend for soup. Arrange a short phone call. Meet at the library. Watch a film together at home.

Agree on a time that works for both of you. A simple plan is often easier to repeat.

You can also leave room for honesty: “I want to see you, and I need an early evening.”

Share something from your kitchen

Prepare a familiar soup with culinary thyme or finish a bowl of grains and vegetables with parsley.

If someone asks about the flavor, share what you have noticed while cooking with the herb. Ask about the seasonings they enjoy.

Everyday plant knowledge can grow through conversation, recipes, and family memories. Record whose recipe or suggestion you learned from.

Make room to receive

Romans 12:9–13 describes sincere love, mutual affection, and hospitality.

As you reflect, consider both offering care and allowing others to contribute. Let someone bring the bread, make the call, or check on you.

Relationships have room to deepen when responsibility is shared.

Your self-care appointment: Arrange one manageable moment of connection for the next seven days. Include a clear time and share the planning.

Scripture for reflection: Romans 12:9–13.

Journal prompt: Who helps me feel cared for, and how can I make room to receive their company?

XOXO, Elicia
